When starting the account recovery steps the credit card is an extra option and not required and it sounds like you shipped it, which is good. You are in account recovery which is an automated process. We don't care about saving any data on the iPad at all. Is there a way to reset the thing to its original form and then associate a new Apple ID, one that we now actively use, with it? I'm seeing some third party tools available, but not sure of which ones would be safest. Retrying the recovery process results in being stuck at the same step.
